The Dementia web address and helpline number will be given at the end of the programme as a source of support.

Designing Hospital Environments for People with Dementia

Two-day residential workshops

17-18 May 2012 – Cranage Hall near Crewe;

5-6 September 2012 – Alexandra House near Swindon

There is increasing evidence that the environment of care, particularly in acute hospitals, can have a significant effect on people who have dementia. Yet health professionals and estates and facilities staff often struggle with how best to create a therapeutic environment for people with dementia.

The King’s Fund’s award-winning Enhancing the Healing Environment programme proves that straightforward and inexpensive changes to the design and fabric of the care environment can have a considerable impact on the wellbeing of people with dementia, while at the same time reducing overall service costs.

Age UK Care in Crisis Petition

Care is in crisis. Many of those who need help and support are being badly let down by a faltering system, while others find themselves having to sell their homes in order to pay for support they need. The Government has promised a White Paper on care reform in the Spring. This is a crucial moment to influence the future direction of social care – possibly for a generation.

Age UK is asking you to take part in its e-petition and add your voice to the growing number calling for serious reform of services.

The All-Party Parlimentary Group on dementia wants to hear from carers, families, people affected by dementia and the professionals who support them. The new inquiry for 2012 will focus on how to increase the rates of diagnosis across the UK. Your experiences and ideas are needed, if you want there to be reform your chance is here!

Six Golden Rules for Caring at Christmas

If you’re caring for someone over Christmas and New Year make things as easy as possible. Our six golden rules are:-

If family and friends offer help – take it!
If family and friends fail to offer help – ask for it!
Do not presume that everyone else has a perfect Christmas, we all have problems. It can be stressful for everyone not just carers.
Take shortcuts, does it really matter if you buy your mince pies, no need to slave over the cooker all day. Let everyone know that you plan to keep it simple! Let your guests bring lovely food with them if they visit!
Ask for presents which are useful to you, either equipment to make life easier or help with doing something, perhaps decorating, gardening or offering sitting for a couple of hours. But don’t refuse presents given with thought and love.
If you make a New Year’s resolution, how about something to make your carer role easier, perhaps some training or going to a carers’ group. Any session held by Guideposts will be a great opportunity to get together with like minded people, make some new contacts and develop your confidence. A warm welcome is guaranteed!
